    La tradición clásica tiene una fundamental relevancia en la construcción intelectual de América y su identificación con Occidente. En este contexto, la presente investigación analiza tanto la presencia como la refutación de la idea de Aristóteles sobre la inhabitabilidad de la zona tórrida en las historias naturales escritas por los jesuitas José de Acosta y Alonso de Ovalle (siglos XVI y XVII). Aunque los viajes de descubrimiento y conquista vinieron a descartar esta creencia del mundo antiguo, el tema resultó de gran interés para estos religiosos, quienes desarrollaron la temática en sus obras, reflejando el uso de nuevas formas de indagación de la realidad que van más allá de las establecidas por el aristotelismo y generando una posición flexible frente a lo que ven en el Nuevo Mundo, que constituye una realidad diferente a la que hubiera podido observar el filósofo.

    Classical tradition is essential in the intellectual conformation of Arnerica and its identification with western culture. In this context, this investigation analyses the presence and the refutation of the Aristotle's idea about the impossibility to settle clown in the Torrid Zone. This idea appeared in the natural histories written by the Jesuits José de Acosta and Alonso de Ovalle (16th and 17th centuries). Although the discovering travels and the conquest dismissed this belief from the ancient world, the subject was interesting for these priests who developed this matter in their works, reflecting the use of new ways os searching reality beyond Aristotelian theories and settleing a flexible position to see the New World, a different reality unknown by the Philosopher.
