This article explains the relevance of the classics of sociology in light of the problems and processes that concern contemporary societies. The work shows investigations that recover, dis-cuss and contextualize the classics to improve the understanding of con-temporary problems. In this sense, the findings show that Durkheim’s rele-vance lies in revisiting problems such as suicide and violence, while the We-berian categories of rationality, charis-ma, bureaucracy, patrimonialism and the State continue to be debated. For his part, Simmel bequeathed the cat-egories of social interaction, fashion and social distance, which have not lost academic relevance.
