    El Ensayo de Fisiognomía de Rodolphe Töpffer —primer texto escrito sobre teoría del Noveno Arte— hunde sus raíces en diferentes querellas de la filosofía estética del siglo XVIII: las relaciones entre pintura y poesía, la teoría del alma bella de Schiller o los vínculos entre las emociones mixtas y lo sublime. Igualmente, la obra de Töpffer se proyecta hacia el futuro con su pionera teoría del trazo —que lo emparenta con los actuales tests de personalidad— y serviría de inspiración a Duchenne de Boulogne, fundador de la neurología.

    Rodolphe Töpffer's Essay on Physiognomy - the first theoretical text on the Ninth Art - deepens its roots into different disputes of 18th century aesthetic philosophy: the conflict between painting and poetry, Schiller's theory of the beautiful soul or the relations between mixed emotions and the sublime. Moreover, Töpffer's work projects itself into the future with his pioneering trace theory - related to contemporary personality tests - and would inspire Duchenne de Boulogne, founder of neurology.
