The Essay on Physiognomy (1845) by the Swiss artist Rodolphe Töpffer is widely considered as the first theoretical writing on Comics. Departing from Physiognomy –which tries to determine personality through facial features– he outlines a method to create "graphic literature". After describing the properties of the drawing line, he introduces a double order of signs: the permanent ones, which express morality or intelligence, and the non-permanent ones, which express emotions, weaving each argument with a series of illustrations.
