Inscriptions et écriture, Leiris, Éluard, Char

  • Such 'inscriptions' as engravings, tracks, graffiti and epitaphs ring within or around a text, may at first glance appear to represent a different or reverse layer when considered in relation to the linear discourse they disrupt. Such inscriptions' however, can be readily accommodated within the conventions of surrealism and amongst those other stylistic practices particular to the movement. In considering the relationship between inscription and écriture in the surrealist works of Leiris, Eluard and Char, it becomes clear that for Leiris the relationship is between the sign that strikes like lightning, inscribed in capitals on the human subject, and the sinuous progression of autobiographical discourse For Eluard, the myth of pure 'parole' , freed from the bonds of the book, delays his emergence into the visible universe of signs and 'inscriptions'. For Char, the moribund fixity of the inscription must be reintegrated little by little into the movement of becoming. Thus can be seen the shuttling back and forth of surrealist writing between revelation as vouchsafed by the inscribed sign become sacred and liberation into the unending, free flux of 'parole' .
