The Alboran Sea is an extensional basin placed on thinned continental crust and sitted in a regional compressive context. Deep seismic reflection and industrial multichannel seismic refleclion profiles show two major seismic units in the northeastern continental margin of the Alboran Sea, and the transition zone towards the Southbalearic Basin. These units have been defined by means of seismic fabric characterization and correspond to the sedimentary and basement units of the basin. The basement of the Alboran Sea Basin corresponds to the upper crust under the Betics Cordillera and eastwards presents a transition to an oceanic crust. The major tectonics structures are normal faults. The ultimate N40W convergence between Africa and Iberia produced at least three different orders of inversion structures.
