Resumen de A Book of the Twelve Caverns in the State Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia): Edition and Digital Arrangement

Daniel Miguel Méndez Rodríguez

  • The State Hermitage Museum keeps in its collections a copy of the Book of the Twelve Caverns, previously known as Naville’s spell 168 of the Book of Going Forth by Day (i.e. Book of the Dead). This composition is a cosmographic text that belongs to the Books of the Netherworld consisting of a litany of the deities who dwelled in the caverns of the Duat. This document under consideration is a funerary papyrus used to help the deceased traverse this mythical topography of the Beyond while profiting diverse benefits as a counterpart of the offerings made to those divinities. The purpose of this article is to present a digital reconstruction based on an accurate textual and iconographic identification due to the fragmentary condition of the manuscript. Its analysis, edition, and translation will be based on a comparison with other sources of the book.
