L’adaptació és el mecanisme que els organismes empren per ajustar-se a canvis en el seu entorn. En aquests darrers mesos, més o menys, tots estem experimentant aquests canvis durant la pandèmia de la COVID19. Com a professors d’universitat, hem hagut d’ajustar temaris, canviar les metodologies docents i les dinàmiques de la classe presencial, quasi literalment d’un dia per l’altra. Els estudiants també s’han hagut d’adaptar a tots aquests canvis, i fer un esforç per a continuar el seu aprenentatge i assolir els requeriments per aprovar les assignatures del semestre. L’assignatura de Biologia del Desenvolupament a la Universitat de Barcelona és obligatòria al grau de Ciències Biomèdiques i optativa al grau de Biologia, amb un total de més de 200 alumnes. Enguant hem creat els minisimposis “Hot Topics in Developmental Biology for the 21st Century” amb temàtiques específiques i úniques rellevants als graus de Biologia i Ciències Biomèdiques. En aquestes xerrades els ponents presentaren la situació actual del camp, els desafiaments del futur i acabaven amb un pregunta oberta als alumnes. En grups d’estudi fixos de fins a 4 persones fets pels mateixos alumnes havien de respondre la pregunta fent un escrit en format de resum de conferència que inclogués una breu introducció, remarques la importància de la pregunta formulada i n’hi dones resposta. Els grups d’estudi havien d’entregar 4 escrits de la seva elecció d’entre les 5 xerrades del simposi del seu grau. Com a incentiu cada professor seleccionaria fins a 5 resums del seu seminari per ser publicats en aquesta revista. En aquesta edició trobareu un article per cada un dels temes candents a la biologia del desenvolupament presentats als minisimposis. Cada article comença amb un resum del seminari escrit pel ponent on es presenta el tema, seguit de la pregunta proposada als alumnes, i finalment, les respostes dels alumnes seleccionades per a la seva publicació.

Adaptation is the mechanism that organisms use to adjust to changes in their environment. We are all, more or less, experiencing this process during the on-going COVID19 pandemic. As university teachers, we have had to adjust course syllabus, teaching methodologies and class dynamics, almost literally on the go. Students, have also had to adapt and embrace all these changes in an effort to achieve the academic requirements of this course.
The Developmental Biology course at the University of Barcelona is compulsory in the Biomedical Sciences Degree and elective in the Biology Degree, so overall it has some 200 students. We created a minisymposium on “Hot Topics in Developmental Biology for the 21stCentury” for the Biology and the Biomedical Sciences degrees, each with their specific topics. During these talks the instructors presented the state of the art and challenges in the field, ending with an open question to the students. In fixed work groups of up to four, students had to write a short assay answering the question in an abstract format including a section on background, relevance of the question and response. They were required to hand in 4 assays of their choice out of the 5 talks. As an incentive, each instructor was to select up to five abstracts to be published in this journal.
In this month’s edition you will find the articles covering the 10 hot topics presented in the minisymposiums. Each article starts with an abstract by the speaker presenting the topic, followed by the question posed, and finally the selected answers written by the students.
