En términos de Grice, lo que se comunica tendrá que ver con la intencióncomunicativa que el hablante tuvo al proferir algo, esto es, qué condiciones se danpara determinar que cuando “H (el hablante) profirió p (una proferencia), en unasituación, lo que realmente quiso decir fue x (un significado distinto a la proferencialingüística)”. El reconocimiento de la intención será, para Grice, la justificación de laproferencia lingüística, es decir, su verdadero significado. Sin embargo, la nocióngriceana de intención presenta múltiples inconvenientes conceptuales que han sidodestacados por diversos detractores, uno de ellos David Lewis quien propone unaalternativa satisfactoria a dicha noción.
