En este artículo se rinde homenaje a Salvador Giner, sociólogo y filósofo social, autor de una muy amplia y variada obra que ha marcado la sociología española a lo largo de los últimos cincuenta años. Se ha seleccionado el tema de la libertad y su estructura social por la importancia que tiene dentro de su obra y por la originalidad con la que lo trata. En este trabajo se analiza cómo Giner enfoca y desarrolla ambos aspectos, en el marco de su biografía intelectual y de los debates sociológicos de los que la estructura social de la libertad forma parte. Este tema es también una muestra de la importancia que siempre le concedió al papel que tiene la ciudadanía a la hora de cambiar y mejorar sus condiciones de vida en la sociedad, una de las formas en que se puede concretar la dimensión moral de la sociología.

This article pays tribute to Salvador Giner, sociologist and social philosopher, author of a very broad and varied body of work that has marked Spanish sociology over the last fifty years. The theme of liberty and its social structure has been selected for the importance it has within his work and for the originality with which he treats it. In this work it is analyzed how Giner focuses and develops both aspects within the framework of his intellectual biography and the sociological debates of which the social structure of freedom forms part. This theme also shows the importance that he has always attached to the role of citizens in changing and improving their living conditions in society, one of the ways in which the moral dimension of sociology can be specified.
