    This article studies the persistence and re-appropriations of Menippean satire in the work of two major Spanish eighteenth-century authors – a genre greatly sought after in Europe by humanists and baroque writers. Whereas Gregorio Mayáns y Siscar (1699-1781)’s Rhetoric focused on the constitution of a canon of Spanish authors, Juan Pablo Forner (1756-1797)’s Exequias cast light, through the Menippean genre, on the cultural identity and politics of Castilian. In both cases, one may see a line of continuity in the making of a national literature and taste which goes beyond the contrast often drawn between the dynasty of the Habsburgs (which ended in 1700) and that of the Bourbons

    Cet article propose d’étudier la survivance et les réappropriations de la satire ménippée, genre très prisé en Europe par les humanistes et les écrivains baroques, dans l’œuvre de deux auteurs majeurs du dix-huitième siècle espagnol. Si la Rhétorique de Gregorio Mayáns y Siscar (1699-1781) se focalise sur la constitution d’un canon d’auteurs espagnols, les Exequias de Juan Pablo Forner (1756-1797) offrent une réflexion identitaire et politique sur la langue castillane par le biais du genre ménippéen. Dans les deux cas, par-delà les oppositions que l’on a voulu dresser entre les dynasties Habsbourgh (qui s’achève en 1700) et Bourbon, se dessine une ligne de continuité forte dans la constitution d’une littérature et d’un goût nationaux
