  La infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana es una enfermedad requiere un control y seguimiento estricto para una adecuada evolución. El virus se puede transmitir de una madre seropositiva al feto durante el embarazo, el parto o la lactancia materna. En pacientes embarazadas, el diagnóstico previo o nuevo de infección es esencial para el  inicio temprano de tratamiento antirretroviral, además de controles prenatales periódicos para verificar su cumplimiento con las pruebas inmunológicas y virales. Las pruebas diagnósticas  en el paciente pediátrico varían según la edad del paciente. Actualmente se recomienda la terapia antirretroviral para todos los niños y adolescentes con infección.

  Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus  is a disease that requires strict control and monitoring for its proper evolution. It can be transmitted from an positive mother to the fetus during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. In pregnant patients, a previous or new diagnosis of infection is essential for the early initiation of antiretroviral therapy, in addition to regular prenatal check-ups to verify compliance with immunological and viral tests. Diagnostic tests in the pediatric patient vary according to the age of the patient. Antiretroviral therapy is currently recommended for all children and adolescents with infection.
