    From the prologue, ruins and remnants of the past are constantly present in La Fortune des Rougon and they command a multi-level reading, between myth and history, eternity and current events. Designed from the very beginning as a story of the origins, the novel is an ode to bygone days and a meditation on destiny. From this perspective, the ruin—a tombstone, an old disused well, a section of wall, a shanty...—refers to old poorly repressed tragedies and contributes to wryly acquiring distance with respect to contemporary history. The mystery hovering around the character of the ancestor and the sacrificial destiny of the idyllic couple formed by Silvère and Miette fits the interpretation of the remains into the paradigm of sacred nature. With the family tree allegory, the novel turns into a cosmogonical and prophetic fable

    La ruine et le vestige, constamment présents dans La Fortune des Rougon, dès le prologue, déterminent une lecture à plusieurs niveaux, entre mythe et histoire, éternité et actualité. Conçu d’emblée comme un récit des Origines, le roman est une ode au révolu et une méditation sur le destin. Dans cette optique, la ruine – pierre tombale, vieux puits abandonné, pan de rempart, masure... – qui fait signe vers des drames anciens et mal refoulés, participe aussi à la mise à distance ironique de l’histoire contemporaine. Le mystère qui s’attache au personnage de l’aïeule et le destin sacrificiel du couple idyllique formé par Silvère et Miette inscrivent la lecture des vestiges dans le paradigme de la nature sacrée. L’allégorie de l’arbre généalogique achève la conversion du roman en fable cosmogonique et prophétique
