Ditadura brasileira e questão indígena: entre as lutas por direitos civis e os debates sobre direitos humanos no mundo

    The article analyzes the international repercussion triggered by the disclosure, in March 1968, of the results of the Committee of Inquiry aimed at investigating complaints against officials of the Indian Protection Service (SPI), implicated in the practice of crimes against Brazilian indigenous populations. The civilmilitary dictatorship was faced with the opening of an important front of action on indigenist politics, until then little expressive and disorganized, this movement was articulated with strength from the years 1960, considerably due to the crimes against the Indians reported in the period. Suffering from the internal pressure of the press and some political groups, dissatisfied with the treatment given to the complaints presented, the dictatorship needed to face the reflections of the growing debates on human rights and the struggle of groups socially peripherals for civil rights that recruited in the course of the years 1960, reaching critical points in the year of disclosure of the Figueiredo report.

    Resumo: O artigo analisa a repercussão internacional desencadeada com a divulgação, em Março de 1968, dos resultados da Comissão de Inquérito destinada a apurar denúncias contra funcionários do Serviço de Proteção aos Índios (SPI), implicados na prática de crimes contra populações indígenas brasileiras. A ditadura civil-militar se viu diante da abertura de uma importante frente de atuação sobre sua política indigenista.

    Até então pouco expressivo e desorganizado, esse movimento se articulou com força a partir dos anos 1960, consideravelmente em função dos crimes contra os indígenas relatados no período. Sofrendo a pressão interna da imprensa e de alguns grupos políticos insatisfeitos com o tratamento dado às denúncias apresentadas, a ditadura precisou encarar ainda os reflexos dos crescentes debates sobre os direitos humanos e a luta de grupos socialmente periféricos por direitos civis. Estes recrudesciam no desenrolar dos anos 1960, chegando a pontos críticos no ano de divulgação do Relatório Figueiredo
