  The commercial age in Ancient Rome, which covered the second half of the Republic and the whole Princedom, lived a territorial and economic expansion. It was based on the performance of international trade, with little background in human history until that time. Partly as a cause and as a result of this development, the Bank activity was essential to expand the business and commercial network. The legal regulation of this activity, in which highlighted the role of the praetor and the iuris prudentes, was also a substantial element for consolidating and fulfilling the social function of banking. This article aims to elucidate how was the banker’s profession in Rome, as well as the operation of that business. In addition, it analyses who were the financiers that would take place and what was your most important normative order.

  O período comercial da Roma antiga, que abrangeu a segunda metade da República e todo o Principado, viveu uma expansão territorial e econômica, com base no desempenho do comércio internacional, com poucos antecedentes na história humana até esse momento. Em parte causa e em parte consequência desse desenvolvimento, a atividade bancária foi imprescindível para expandir a rede empresarial e comercial romana. A regulação jurídica desta atividade, na que destacou a atuação do pretor e a dos iuris prudentes, foi, também, um elemento substancial para a consolidação e o cumprimento da função social da banca. Este artigo visa a desenhar como era o ofício de banqueiro em Roma, como foi o funcionamento deste negócio, quem eram os operadores financeiros que o desenvolveram, e qual foi a sua ordem normativa mais importante.
