    : Durante la progresiva cristianización del Imperio romano, comenzada por Constantino y continuada por sus sucesores, los ludi, en sus distintas formas (gladiatorios, circenses o escénicos), fueron incentivados desde instancias oficiales.

    Aunque sus connotaciones religiosas tradicionales eran evidentes, el arraigo cultural de dichas celebraciones entre los ciudadanos hacía de ellas un medio idóneo de transmisión de la ideología imperial. En particular, las editiones praetoriae, organizadas en honor de la familia imperial en Roma y Constantinopla y meticulosamente reguladas en distintas normas, ofrecían a los príncipes la oportunidad de ejercer su autoridad sobre los miembros del Senado. Pero, sobre todo, la potenciación de los juegos sobre otras formas de piedad tradicional obedecía al hecho de que sustituían funcionalmente a los sacrificios.

    While the progressive christianization of the Roman Empire, begun by Constantine and continued by his sucessors, the ludi, in their different forms (gladiatory, circenses or scenic), were promoted from official instances. Although their evident heathen connotations, these celebrations, thanks to their cultural deepseatedness amongst the Empire´s citizens, became a suitable mean of transmission of the imperial ideology. Particularly, the editiones praetoriae, organized in honour of the imperial family in Rome and Constantinople, and carefully regulated by different acts, gave to the princes the opportunity of rule their authority over the senators. But, above all, the promotion of games instead of other forms of heathen piety was due to the fact that they supplied functionnally the sacrifices.
