Management of tomato waste: biomethane production and nutrient recovery

    • In the context of biorefinery, anaerobic digestion (AD) is a well-known technology for wastes valorization. The aim of this work is the development of an integrated solution for tomato waste, which involves the production of biogas by AD and the application of the digestate as fertilizer. The AD assays were conducted using several substrates to inoculum ratios (S/I). The optimal methane production was 361 NmL CH4 gVS−1, using a S/I = 1.0. The digestate was separated from the liquid by centrifugation, and the characterization of the two fractions (liquid fraction – LF and solid fraction – SF) was conducted. In the LF and SF about 0.35 ± 0.08 mg TKN g TS−1 and 0.32 ± 0.02 mg TKN g TS−1 were determined, respectively. Regarding phosphorus, 0.88 ± 0.04 mgP g TS−1 (LF) and 113.15 ± 2.74 mgP g TS−1 (SF) were found. In the case of LF is diluted with a factor of 25 (v/v), no phytotoxic effect was observed.
