  • Resumen
    • In 1981, Dekesel raised doubts about the academic integrity of the engraver Hubertus Goltzius (1526-1583). He pointed out that none of the four coin collectors Goltzius claimed to have visited in Douai in 1560 could actually have been living there in that year. Answering to calls to further investigate Goltzius’ list of collectors visited, I chose to study the collectors from the place where Goltzius was raised: Venlo. Rich archival data allow to assess (1) whether these collectors actually or most probably lived in 1556, the year when Goltzius supposedly visited them, and (2) whether they had the academic titles that Goltzius bestowed upon them. The results are clear and allow to reinterpret Dekesel’s findings.
