En las primeras décadas del siglo XX, y desde su formato de tira de prensa, el cómic genera personajes que se convierten en iconos, como Popeye. Fueron los años de del modernismo y las vanguardias que venían de Europa, pero también los años de la gran pujanza para las ficciones populares ofrecidas por los nuevos medios: el cine y la historieta. Décadas más tarde, Robert Altman realiza una adaptación de Popeye al cine que es a la vez, desde las propias circunstancias históricas y artísticas de Altman, tanto un diálogo con el cómic original de Elzie Crisler Segar como con el propio icono histórico y social, si no —como el resto de su filmografía— con su mismo país.

In the first decades of the 20th century, and from its daily-strip format, the comic generated characters that became icons, as Popeye. These were years of Modernism and the avant-garde that came from Europe, but also the years of great streght for popular fictions offered by the new media: cinema and comics. Decades later, Robert Altman makes a film adaptation of Popeye that is, from Altman's own historical and artistic circumstances, both a dialogue with the original Elzie Crisler Segar comic and with the historical and social icon himself, if not —like the rest of his filmography— with his own country.
