  • Resumen
    • The novel-turned-television series El tiempo entre costuras (María Dueñas, 2009) allows for reflection about the idea of the seam, which is key to protagonist Sira Quiroga's life trajectory. Applying the work of Hélène Cixous to read the seams in this novel, those spaces in between, makes them apparent. Sewing is a language Sira uses to fashion her identity. Her position in the fashion system initially allows her to make a living, and eventually takes on other important purposes. Sira moves from being a mujer florero, to being destitute, to finally using sewing as a mode of expression with which she restores her sense of self. Ultimately, Sira is empowered by mobilizing her sewing skills to stitch Morse code into paper patterns, concealing messages for her work spying on the wives of Nazi officers and political figures linked to the Franco regime.
