Resumen de Perceptions of Extra Credit by Hospitality and Tourism Faculty
The subject of extra credit has been an ongoing topic of debate among faculty. Use of extra credit stirs concerns about grade inflation and devaluing class requirements. Recently new debate has arisen among hospitality and tourism educators concerning its use. This paper provides results of a survey of hotel and tourism faculty that examined their uses and perceptions of extra credit. Results indicate that faculty tend to support using extra credit as a reward for students but, also recognize extra credit benefits that help students take corrective actions for class. Hospitality and tourism faculty are concerned about fairness issues and the possibility of extra credit devaluing class information.
