Hospitality students aspire to executive committee positions. In this study full-service hotel executive committee managers rate the importance of industry competencies to their career success. Multidimensional scaling maps these industry executives' perceptions of which industry competencies are important by position and how they are learned. Competencies such as communication, customer relations, supervisory, and motivation, are more likely to be learned on the job. This study supports a curriculum emphasis on experiential learning.
