Mustafa Tepeci, Won Seok Seo, Arun Upneja, Frederick DeMicco

  • This article investigates the supply and demand for hospitality/tourism management (HTM) doctorates in the U.S. A survey questionnaire was developed and mailed to 144 administrators of the programs offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in HTM. Findings in the study indicate that approximately 15–20 students graduate every year with a doctoral degree in HTM. The administrators expect doctoral student enrollments to increase by about one third over the next five years. On the demand side, there has been a significant increase in the number of HTM doctorates hired. According to the survey results, more than half of the doctorates hired by HTM schools during the last three years received their degrees in HTM. Advertisements in the CHRIE newsletter, Communique, announced a total of 201 faculty positions during the last three years in which 74% of the positions required a doctoral degree. This study concludes with implications for prospective students and HTM school administrators
