The aim of this paper is to analize the contribution of Ricardo Codorníu y Stárico to the development of Spanish information science of the beginnings of the XIXth century. Codorníu, a forests engineer-, was very interested in the Decimal Classification System (the belgian version of the Melvil Dewey Classification) which translated in 1911 in order to be useful to the Spanish forests engineers. By other hand, in order to get an auxiliary universal language, Codorníu, considered that the esperanto, the language created by the polish physician Louis Zamenhof, was the best option.
