The sixth Round of the European Social Survey provides the opportunity to systematically describe and compare Europeans’ conceptions or views of democracy using an extensive number of indicators. Based on these indicators, this chapter addresses the questions of which are the aspects of democracy that Europeans consider most and least important for an ideal democracy, and to what extent there is a consensus across Europe with regard to the importance of these features. This chapter also seeks to assess the extent to which Europeans are democratically aware, by analyzing their capacity to respond to questions related to their views of democracy.
