‘In AI research we seek to give concrete form to abstract ideas by representing them as programs which can be run, observed, amended, and used as components of subsequent larger systems or activities. Programs should be regarded as the side‐effect of the process of active thinking for which the computer has been a crucial catalyst. The true objective of AI is to come to a more mature understanding of our thinking processes and activities, and of the way in which we make sense of our world.’ (Richard Ennals [1987], Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology, Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 24, 2, 90.) This paper details such an effort by undergraduate students using as a vehicle the design and development of an expert system.
