    Abu Sayyaf es uno de los grupos islámicos radicales que luchan por la creación de un Estado Islámico en el sur de Filipinas. La diferencia con otros que han actuado allí durante décadas es la cercanía a las tesis de la Yihad global que su fundador, Abubakar Janjalani, extendió entre la población y los combatientes frustrados de los otros grupos rebeldes. Así, a pesar de no ser el grupo más numerosos, ni el más implantado entre la sociedad del sur de filipinas, sus contactos con Al Qaeda y Jemaah Islamiyah, sus acciones terroristas y sus objetivos regionales hacen de este pequeño grupo uno de los de más difícil trato para el Gobierno de Filipinas. Su debilidad, sin embargo, radica en cierta tendencia a caer en la delincuencia común, como los secuestros por dinero y la piratería.

    Abu Sayyaf is one of the radical Islamic groups fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in the southern Philippines. The difference with others who have worked there for decades is the proximity to the thesis of global Jihad. Its founder, Abubakar Janjalani, spread the Wahhabism among the population and combatants frustrated by the other rebel groups. So, despite not being the largest group or the most supported by the southern Philippine society, contacts with Al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiyah, his terrorist activities and their regional objectives make this small group one of the most difficult for the Philippine government to defeat. Its weakness, however, lies in a tendency to fall into common crime such as kidnappings and piracy.
