Desde el año 2009 Boko Haram ha evolucionado hasta convertirse en la organización terrorista más sanguinaria del continente africano; desde una amenaza geográficamente limitada al noroeste de Nigeria, hasta establecer una alianza estratégica con DAESH. Sus acciones, que llegaron ser la causa del retraso en las elecciones en Nigeria durante el mes de febrero, han provocado una respuesta regional que ha supuesto un punto de inflexión en sus conquistas territoriales.
Sin embargo, los miembros de Boko Haram, lejos de poder ser considerados derrotados, sobreviven como una amenaza persistente a la seguridad regional. La eventual victoria militar no será suficiente para solventar las raíces profundas del conflicto presentes en el noroeste de Nigeria, sin mejorar las condiciones económicas y sociales en la región, la reorganización y pervivencia de la organización terrorista parece asegurada.
