A survey was carried out into the availability of open learning material covering the broad subject of information technology and the suitability of such material to act as an introduction to the subject for managers in industry. The results identified a large number of industrial and educational organizations producing a variety of different packages using material based on text, slides, video or computer equipment using interactive video laser discs. A list of 27 suitable packages was selected as meeting the original aims of the survey. Such is the rate of change in the field of information technology, that within nine months a follow‐up survey identified considerable changes both in the organizations and the packages they produce. Within the limits of the survey, educational organizations were found to lag behind commercial training organizations in methods of presentation. For the person entering into this field there is a bewildering choice and the need to maintain an up‐to‐date database of courses is clearly established.
