The Department of Education and Science launched the Professional, Industrial and Commercial Updating Programme (PICKUP) in 1982 The programme aims to help colleges, polytechnics and universities to increase and improve the work they do in meeting adult training, updating and retraining needs of employers and their workforces General progress to date has been impressive and the programme has a target of increasing the participation rate in PICKUP training to 1 in 10 of the working population by 1992
