Resumen de Resource Centre Support for Open Learning Systems

Rufus de Silva

  • Resource centres have, to date, generally been considered in terms of the organization and retrieval of resources. This article goes further, describing the role of the resource centre within a model of an Open Learning System (OLS). Within such a model, the resource centre has a significant role in the open learning process and is a facilitator of learning through the delivery and management of open learning. The way in which this role is exercised in a college of higher education is described. The worth of an OLS is seen in terms of the benefits arising from economies, centralization and education and training. Finally, the identification of needs, staff development, and library instruction are considered in terms of effective support strategies for resource centre‐based open learning.
