Cuidados líquidos en Sing, unburied, sing y Salvage the bones: Un recorrido por el amor y las relaciones humanas

    Este artículo explora las relaciones de amor y los cuidados en dos novelas de Jesmyn Ward Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017) y Salvage the Bones (2012), a través de las perspectivas sobre los cuidados que el sociólogo polaco Zygmunt Bauman defiende en Amor líquido (2012) en concreto su tercer capítulo “Sobre la dificultad de amar al prójimo” que inspira el análisis que aquí se hace. Se muestra cómo las relaciones que las madres de las novelas tienen con su entorno y con su propia maternidad son diferentes a pesar de encontrarse en circunstancias similares. Se deduce que la familia y la comunidad afroamericana es lo único que posibilita la salvación de estas mujeres. Una se encuentra cerca de dicho núcleo familiar por lo que se salva, y la otra, alienada de su entorno por el consumo de drogas, no. Finalmente se proponen las novelas de Ward como respuesta a los dramáticos y escandalosos destinos que tradicionalmente aguardaban a los personajes afroamericanos, mostrando la complejidad de las discriminaciones que sufre esta población y refutando la visión monolítica de una única experiencia afroamericana, dando a sus personajes la posibilidad de errar sin negar su discriminación.

    The present article examines love and care in two novels by Jesmyn Ward –Sing, Unburied, Sing(2017) and Salvage the Bones(2012) –through the ideas posited by Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman in Liquid Love(2012)particularly in its third chapter “On the difficulty of loving thy neighbor”which inspires my analysis. This article shows the differences among the relationships that the mother protagonists have with their environment and their maternity despite the fact that they find themselves in the same circumstances. I conclude that the African American family and community offerthe only possible salvation for these women. One of them is close to such family which allows her to be saved and the other, alienated from her family due to her drug abuse,is not. Finally, Ward’s novels establish aconversation with the tradition of dramatic, shocking, even morbid endings for African American characters in previous literature. Ward shows the complexity of contemporary discrimination refuting a unique monolithic vision of the (female) African American experience allowing her characters to make mistakes while showing the discrimination they suffer.
