This paper outlines the procedures adopted in the development and evaluation of a two‐day course on lecturing and explaining. The course was based upon the results of surveys of lecturers’ and students’ views of explaining and lecturing. The paper describes the results of the survey, the development of the course, and some of the evaluations undertaken. The evaluations reported here indicate that the course achieved its goals of helping lecturers to improve their techniques of structuring and presenting explanations.
