Resumen de Correspondence Education and Mass Media:: Some Issues and Concerns

Denis Hlynka, Paul Hurly

  • Videotex has been identified by educators as the newest medium which could significantly enhance instruction, particularly distance education. Yet the impact of new media on the educational sector has been minimal and disappointing.

We identify reasons why media innovations are not adopted by mainstream education, as well as correspondence programmes. The ‘gadget syndrome’, the perpetuation of ‘audiovisual myths’, and the inadequacy of media research, contribute to this situation. More effective application can be achieved through the systematic use of media selection models and a greater awareness of media attributes. Educators who promote the use of instructional media will need to be cognizant of purposive change strategies to facilitate the adoption of appropriate media techniques.
