The purpose of this paper is to analyze the causes of the difficulties in transmitting to the societythe geological knowledge: soil, subsoil and geological processes. Some of these difficulties areinherent, among other causes, to: i) the geological concepts themselves, which represent three-dimensional objects with complex relations between them; ii) to the interpretative nature of someof these concepts; and Hi) the long scale of the geological time. Using geological maps as example, we will show how "non geologist" read them, and we analyze the process of understandingthat they follow in order to point out the main causes of misunderstanding. Through this analysis, some recommendations are given in order to improve communication between geologists andsociety.
