  • Resumen
    • Existence of groundwater contaminated with fluids from different sources immiscible with it, the socalled non aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs), added to the physical and chemical complexity of thesesubstances, which in many cases are a mixture of different compounds, and that of their migrationprocesses in the subsurface makes it necessary to apply methodologies different than those commonly used in traditional characterization. The scope of characterization should be the establishment of a sound conceptual model that guides decisions to adopt the most suitable remediationtechnologies in each case, depending both on the contaminant substances (volume, componentsand residence time), and on the media (lithology, structure and hydrogeological setting). During thelast years several specific characterization technologies have been developed, however they mustbe implemented following a dynamic and stable methodology, and should be coupled with traditional hydrogeological investigation methods. A first approach to these technologies and to the mostaccepted methodology in leading countries in this kind of investigations is presented in this paper.
