Do behaviorismo radical ao ecletismo teórico: A recepção da Terapia Comportamental em Belo Horizonte (Brasil)

    This research describes and analyzes aspects of the history of the Behavior Therapy from excerpts of its indigenization in Brazil between the 1960s and 1980s. Its particular focus is on its reception in Belo Horizonte, from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).

    The proposal of this study conforms to contemporary directions on the History of Science, in general and, on the History of Psychology, particularly. It means, to analyze how scientific objects and theories travelled around the world and how what was received has been appropriated. Two sorts of primary sources were used, textual—translations of A.A. Lazarus and J. Wolpe’s books into Brazilian Portuguese—and oral ones—personal communications from characters connected to the translation of such oeuvres and the development of behavioral therapy in the country at the time. The results suggest the coexistence of two kinds of indigenization:

    (1) On the one hand, a little concern to affiliation with any specific behavioral therapy, and (2) on the other, a commitment to the analytical-behavior therapy and its application in the clinical settings. These results help out to understand better the idiosyncratic way in which Behavior Therapy was appropriated in Brazil which would improve the debates on the waves therapies, in the country. They also may impact on the contemporary efforts of Brazilian behavior analysts to define properly the Behavior Analysis Therapy models based on Radical Behaviorism. In conclusion, one notes that there is an idiosyncratic scenario of the indigenization of such a concept in the country, which may help in the understanding of certain historical issues of the conformation of the field.

    O objetivo desta investigação foi descrever e analisar aspectos da história da Terapia Comportamental, a partir dos excertos de sua recepção, no Brasil entre as décadas de 1960 e 1980.

    Particularmente, foca-se na sua recepção em Belo Horizonte, a partir da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). As fontes utilizadas foram textuais—traduções, em português brasileiro, de livros de A. A. Lazarus e J. Wolpe - e orais - comunicações pessoais de atores vinculados à tradução das obras em questão e ao desenvolvimento de práticas psicoterápicas comportamentais no país à época. Os resultados sugerem a coexistência de duas formas de recepção por partes dos brasileiros: (1) Uma com pouca preocupação em se afiliar a um tipo específico de terapia comportamental e, (2) outra, compromissada com a terapia analítico- -comportamental e com a aplicabilidade de suas postulações na esfera clínica. Assim, ao final, nota-se um cenário idiossincrático da apropriação de tal conceito no país, o que pode ajudar na compreensão de certas questões históricas da conformação das terapias comportamentais.
