  Este estudio es un intento de comprender la amenaza potencial para Europa que supone la proximidad de Rusia y el control actual de la ruta marítima septentrional (NSR por sus siglas en inglés), que, con el derretimiento del hielo del Ártico, se está convirtiendo en una opción viable para el transporte marítimo. Un examen del poder de Rusia para influir la actividad en la ruta, y la importancia relativa de la ruta para Europa, permite evaluar hasta qué punto Rusia puede obtener una «ventaja estratégica» debido a su proximidad a la ruta. Los resultados muestran que en lugar de codiciar la ventaja estratégica, los imperativos económicos para desarrollar la ruta y la región ártica son tales que Rusia debe subordinarse a China, para asegurar la inversión económica. China, que se basa en sus fuertes lazos y sus fiables conexiones marítimas con Europa como su principal mercado de exportación, es, potencialmente, la más beneficiada por la apertura de la ruta marítima del norte. La posición cada vez más dominante del Estado chino sobre Rusia es, por lo tanto, la mejor garantía contra cualquier intento de interferir en el comercio de Asia Oriental con Europa en la NSR.

  This study is an attempt to understand the potential threat to Europe inherent in the opening of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) which, with the melting of Arctic ice, is becoming a viable option for maritime transport. An examination of Russia’s ability to influence activity on the route, and the relative importance of the route for Europe, allows an assessment the extent to which Russia can obtain ‘strategic advantage’ as a result of its geographic position. The results show that instead of conveying strategic advantage, the economic imperatives for developing the route and the Arctic region are such that Russia must subordinate itself to China in order to secure economic investment. China relies on its strong ties and reliable maritime connections with Europe, as its main export market, and therefore has, potentially, the most to benefit from the opening of the Northern Sea Route. The increasingly dominant position of the Chinese state over Russia is therefore the best guarantee against any attempt by Russia to interfere in East Asian trade with Europe via the NSR.
