Una vivencia plenamente humana de la fase final de la existencia es una exigencia y un derecho ineludible de todo ser humano. Para que ello sea posible, se hace imprescindible una medicina que, cuidando y acompañando al paciente con todo esmero, y haciéndose cargo de sus variadas necesidades, le ayude a salir airoso de esta encrucijada, poniendo a su alcance, más aún, una visión más auténtica de sí mismo, de los demás, de Dios. El artículo presenta la medicina paliativa como un taller de aprendizaje y creatividad, donde se saborea la grandeza y dignidad de la vida. Lejos de ser meramente un sufriente, el enfermo terminal vive un tiempo de «misterio», agraciado con una ocasión singular para poner broche de oro a su itinerario de vida

A fully human experience of the final steps of existence is a request and an unavoidable right of every human being. For this to be possible, it is essential to have a medicine that, by taking care of the patient and accompanying him with all care, and by taking care of his various needs, helps him to overcome this crossroads, putting within his reach, even more so, a more authentic vision of himself, of others, of God.The article presents palliative medicine as a workshop of learning and creativity, where the greatness and dignity of life can be savored. Far from being merely a sufferer, the terminally ill person lives a time of «mystery», graced with a unique occasion to put the finishing touches to his or her life journey.
