  • Resumen
    • This paper forms part of a larger project concerning the preparation of documents in the court of Philip IV of Spain. The document examined constitutes letters patent issued in September 1658 to the Marquis of Heliche, granting him temporary governorship of the Palacio de Buen Retiro. While both drafts of these letters employ the form propriedad, the final version removes the second >r>: propiedad. My purpose here is modest: to investigate the vitality of these variant spellings in Spanish at this time. To do so, I have consulted relevant dictionaries and various linguistic corpora. The attempt to determine the relative vitality of these competing forms in seventeenth-century Spain will, of course, also allow us to draw some conclusions regarding the usefulness of the tools employed.
