  Sólo el hombre es consciente de su finitud. Ante ella, se angustia, le busca sentido a su vida y a la continuidad de ésta. Se sabe destinado a morir y ese desamparo ontológico le lleva a plantearse la continuidad de su existencia de algún modo. Desde la vida eterna y sin dolor en el más allá después de la muerte (justificación última de todas las religiones) hasta con sofisticadas máquinas artificiales. El problema de la muerte necesariamente remite al problema del destino último del hombre, al sentido de la vida, al qué hacer con la vida que nos legaron; a la justificación del vivir, a la continuidad o la nada; a la vida como ofrenda meta vital o a la desesperada impotencia ante el fin; en todo caso, a la angustia y el miedo a lo desconocido.
