  • Resumen
    • The attitudes of student‐teachers to an aspect of educational technology‐‐the use of PETE (Pupils’ Electronic Testing Equipment) in a particular classroom context‐‐were assessed by a novel method. A short videotaped demonstration of the use of PETE in the classroom was shown to student‐teachers who were requested to write down what they considered to be the salient features of the situation. Their responses were categorised according to the degree of critical awareness shown. A significant relationship between type of response and year of training was found. Compared with first‐year students, third‐year students were less likely to accept uncritically the use of PETE, and were more likely to reject its use outright. Similar trends were shown by older first‐year students, and were associated with the experience of courses in further and higher education not related to teacher‐training. The results are interpreted with reference to the general aims of higher education. Extensions of the method developed in this study are suggested to facilitate the investigation of the structure of teachers’ attitudes to educational technology.
