    El terrorismo se ha convertido en la principal amenaza para el mundo. La proliferación de grupos terroristas y el fácil acceso que tienen a diferentes medios de destrucción han aumentado considerablemente su peligrosidad. Por otro lado, las nuevas tecnologías constituyen excelentes medios de publicidad y captación de simpatizantes a la vez que dificultan la lucha antiterrorista.

    Además de los grupos terroristas que actuaban en zonas localizadas, ha surgido un nuevo tipo de terrorismo de alcance más global, el yihadista. La mayoría de grupos yihadistas hicieron su aparición en Oriente Próximo, pero fueron combatidos y obligados a buscar zonas más seguras para establecer sus bases desde donde planear y coordinar sus ataques. El Sahel africano, área de gran inestabilidad, ha sido el destino elegido por algunos de ellos. La situación en esa zona amenaza la seguridad de toda África y, por su proximidad, la de Europa que es un objetivo prioritario para los grupos yihadistas.

    Terrorism has become the main threat to the world. The proliferation of terrorist groups and their easy access to different means of destruction have considerably increased their danger. On the other hand, new technologies are excellent resources of advertising and attracting supporters while they make the fight against terrorism more difficult.

    In addition to terrorist groups operating in localized areas, a new type of terrorism with a more global reach has emerged, the jihadist. Most jihadist groups appeared in the Middle East but were fought and forced to seek safer areas to establish their bases from which to plan and coordinate their attacks. The African Sahel, an area of great instability, has been the destination chosen by some of them. The situation in that zone threatens the security of the whole Africa and, due to its proximity, that of Europe, which is a priority objective for jihadist groups.
