Resumen de Report on an auto‐instructional course in mathematics
Abstract: A 25‐ to 30‐hour experimental auto‐instructional course in mathematics has been tried out at Ridgewaye School (Secondary Modern Mixed), in an attempt to maximise the use of PL techniques. The students choose their own path through the course on a systems approach and check with the teacher before finalising each task. This gives the teacher a close control of the learning. Student reaction has been very favourable and all have opted for more time for course‐work. A correlation is found between learning in class and learning on course material, and other teachers (other than the writer of the material) find the course effective with their classes. Students say that they like working at their own pace and choosing their tasks, and the teacher, withdrawn from his conventional authoritative position, finds himself in a new role, with many advantages to student‐learning and student‐teacher relationships. The experiment is being extended to twelve classes and it seems reasonable to experiment further into more areas of mathematics and other subjects.
