    A tutti noi nel nostro itinerario formativo, in una cornice diversa, in un luogo diverso, capita di custodire il volto, l’espressione, la mimica di un insegnante. I dati personali, la sua storia, la sua famiglia sono argomenti che alimentano la curiosità degli allievi, noi insegnanti timorosi e al tempo stesso impavidi, affrontiamo i loro sguardi, le loro domande, cercando di preservare la nostra vita privata. Ma ciò che è accaduto alla scrittrice Michal Ben-Naftali, stravolge la normale curiosità che prova un comune studente. Per anni la figura di Elsa Weiss, sua insegnante di lingua inglese, era rimasta custodita nella sua memoria, la Weiss, austera donna dalla figura minuta, dall’aspetto curato ed essenziale, il volto gentile tenuto insieme da un’espressione algida ma emotivamente vulnerabile, aveva affascinato Michal, dedicandole anche talvolta frammenti di sincerità. Elsa si lancia dal balcone della sua casa e con essa lancia un suono sordo ma durevole cheraggiunge Michal Ben-Naftali e alimenta la sua necessità di ricerca, di uno scrupoloso viaggio nell’anima della Signora Weiss. Il dramma esistenziale scaturito dall’essere sopravvissuta alla Shoah, renderà la vita della professoressa Elsa Weiss, un tentativo di demonizzazione dei fantasmi del male, che la accompagneranno per tutto il suo percorso. Leinon saprà mai quale impronta indelebile ha lasciato nel cuore di una giovane laureata in lingua francese, e come la notizia della sua scomparsa, ha fatto nascere il desiderio di ricomporre la sua intricata vicenda di vita vissuta in un angolo del mondo, dove gli esseri umani avevano divorato altri esseri umani.

    In our learning process, even if we are in a different place or frame, it happens that we remember a face, an expression or the particular gestures of a teacher. His personal data, his history and his family are topics that feed students’ curiosity and we, the teachers, frightened and brave at the same time, face their looks and their questions trying to preserve our private life. But what happened to the writer Michal Ben-Naftali, overturns the normal curiosity of a common student. For years the figure of Elsa Weiss, her English teacher, was printed in her memory. Weiss, this petite, austere woman with this tidy and essential aspect, a kind face kept together by an icy expression but emotionally vulnerable, had a big impact on Michal who found her fascinating, giving her even pieces of sincerity. Elsa throws herself out the window of her house and gives a deaf sound but lasting that goes to Michal Ben-Naftali and feeds her need of research, her need of a scrupulous journey inside Mrs. Weiss’ soul. The existential drama resulted from her being a Shoah survivor, will make Elsa Weiss’ life a chance of demonization of evil ghosts that will be with her for her entire life. She will never know what kind of indelible footprint she left in the heart of a young girl graduating in French and how the news of her death gave birth to a new desire of rebuilding her life events in a corner of the world, where human beings ate other human beings
