    La cuarta edición del Congreso de Historia de Barcelona se desarrolló bajo el título genérico de 'Barcelona y el espacio catalán. Ciudad y articulación del territorio'. El propósito de los organizadores fue suscitar el interés de estudiosos de diversas procedencias y crear las condiciones para un debate sobre la evolución de la Barcelona actual. Con esta intención, se lanzó la hipótesis de que tal vez los cambios históricos registrados en torno a 1975 representasen una ruptura fundamental. Se obtuvo la respuesta de un centenar de estudiosos, con trabajos referidos principalmente a los siglos XIX y XX, distribuidos en cuatro áreas temáticas principales: el desarrollo de la economía industrial, la estructura del habitat urbano, las formas de gobierno de la ciudad y la situación de los grupos sociales deprimidos. En general, se subrayó la continuidad histórica local y su importancia -positiva o negativa- como patrimonio para responder a los difíciles retos emergentes. La preocupación por la suerte de los grupos más desfavorecidos en la actualidad confluyó con los esfuerzos por precisar el perfil de la evolución social desde el inicio del siglo XX.

    The fourth Congress on the History of Barcelona took place under the generic title of Barcelona and the Catalan space. City and Articulation of the Territory. The aim of the organizers was to awaken the interest of scholars of different fields and to set up the conditions for a debate on the evolution of present-day Barcelona. With this intention, the hypothesis was launched that the historical changes registered around 1975 perhaps represented a fundamental break. Some one hundred scholars responded, with papers referring chiefly to the 19th and 20th century, which were arranged in four main thematic areas: the development of the industrial economy, the structure of the urban habitat, the forms of city government and the situation of underprivileged social groups. In general, local historical continuity and its importance -whether negative or positive- was underlined as an asset with which to respond to the difficult emerging challenges. The concern with the fate of the currently most underprivileged groups converged with efforts to define the profile of social evolution since the beginning of the 20th century.
