    Cet article aborde une pratique essentielle du christianisme, la prédication, à travers le sermon catholique en France. Partant du principe que le genre de discours est une réalité foncièrement historique, il étudie deux genres distincts exemplifiés par deux textes, l’un de 1702 et l’autre de 2008, qui portent tous deux sur le même thème : la fête de l’Assomption de la Vierge Marie. Le premier a pour auteur un célèbre prédicateur du début du XVIIIe siècle, J.-B. Massillon ; le second a été prononcé par le président de l’épiscopat français au cours du programme dominical catholique de la télévision française « Le jour du Seigneur ». On mène une comparaison entre les deux sermons, qui sont étudiés de deux points de vue 1) comme dispositifs de communication, 2) comme configurations divergentes de la signification de l’Assomption, selon des contraintes imposées par l’interdiscours et la scène d’énonciation.

    The article tackles a key-practice of Christianity, preaching, by considering Catholic sermons in France. By assuming that discourse genres are basically historical realities, we study two of them, exemplified by one sermon delivered in 1702 and another in 2008 ; both deal with the same topic : the holy day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The author of the first homily is J.-B. Massillon, a famous preacher at the turn of the 18th century ; the latter was delivered on French television during a weekly religious program ( 'The Day of the Lord') by the president of the association of French bishops. A comparison is made between the two sermons, studied from two viewpoints : 1) as systems of communication, 2) as diverging configurations of the meaning of the Assumption, according to the constraints imposed by interdiscourse and the situation of enunciation.
