  Este artículo analiza cuatro categorías historiográficas: género, caridad, investigación y tradición para indagar, de acuerdo con distintas fuentes históricas, su repercusión en la construcción de la identidad enfermera contemporánea. Género y caridad, por un lado, son considerados dos importantes baluartes históricos para explicar las características sociológicas de la Enfermería actual. Las afirmaciones teóricas vigentes, de otra parte, serán confrontadas con la teoría galénica sobre la salud y la enfermedad para tratar de dilucidar el alcance real de la innovación que supuestamente proponen

  This article analyses four historiographical categories, namely gender, charity, research and tradition, and their influence on the construction of contemporaneous nursing identity according to several historic sources. Gender and charity, on the one hand, were found to be two of the most important historic standpoints from where to explain the sociological characteristics of modern Nursing. Existing theoretical ideas, on the other hand, were compared to the Galenic theory of health and disease in order to clarify the real scope of their allegedly proposed innovation
