Il capolavoro di Federico De Roberto, I Viceré, ha avuto una complessa vicenda elaborativa, che si è protratta dal luglio del 1891 al settembre del 1894, quando ha avuto termine il tormentoso lavoro delle quattro redazioni e dei pentimenti apportati sulle bozze fino all’ultimo. Questo saggio ricostruisce la storia testuale dei Viceré facendo perno sulla prima e sconosciuta redazione del romanzo – ricomposta attraverso un paziente puzzle musivo – e sugli appunti, gli schemi, i materiali documentari che l’hanno preparata e accompagnata. Ne scaturisce una innovativa focalizzazione dell’officina segreta del romanziere, ma soprattutto del processo attraverso cui l’idea genetica dei Viceré è giunta a congiungere con modernità sperimentale di tecnica narrativa la micro e la macrostoria nel potente affresco di una società in trasformazione epocale.

Federico De Roberto’s masterpiece, I Viceré, had a complex elaborative story, which lasted from July 1891 to September 1894, when the tormenting work of the four autographed drafts and the regrets made on the print proofs ended up to the last. This essay reconstructs the textual history of I Viceré by hinging on the first and unknown draft of the novel – recomposed through a patient mosaic puzzle – and on the notes, schemes, documentary materials that prepared and accompanied it. The result is an innovative focus of the novelist’s secret workshop, but above all of the process through which the genetic idea of I Viceré has come to combine micro and macrohistory with experimental modernity of narrative technique in the powerful fresco of a society in epochal transformation.
