En Barcelona, el reinado de Martín el Humano fue un período de relativa tranquilidad entre dos etapas más conflictivas, la de Juan I y la de Alfonso el Magnánimo. Las incidencias más significativas, estudiadas en este trabajo, son el desinterés por los asuntos de la ciudad, al menos entre los diversos estamentos que formaban la oligarquía municipal, y que se reflejaba en las reuniones del Consejo de Ciento, en el rechazo de los cargos municipales y de los cargos reales, conductas que fueron penalizadas. En cambio, otros ciudadanos, que no debían tener acceso a los cargos municipales, los ambicionaban, de tal manera que recorrían al soborno para obtenerlos. Este remado se caracterizó también por un aumento de la influencia de la ciudad en la corte del rey, con el acceso de muchos barceloneses al Consejo real y a cargos de la cancillería y de la oficina del mestre racional.

In Barcelona, the reign of Martin the Humanist was a period of relative calm between two more conflictive eras, those of John I and of Alfons the Magnanimous. The most significant incidents, which arc examined in this study, involved the lack of interest in the affairs of the city, at least among the various estates forming the municipal oligarchy, which was reflected in the meetings of the Council of the Hundred, and in refusals to accept municipal and royal offices, refusals which were penalised. On the other hand, other citizens, who most likely did not have access to the municipal offices, nevertheless had designs on them and took recourse to bribery to obtain them. This reign was also characterised by the city's increased influence in the King's court, with many Barcelonans becoming members of the King's Council and obtaining offices in the Chancery and in the office of the mestre racional (treasurer).
